Why Pillayâ s Nobel Prize matters in this political environment
On October 9, veteran SA jurist and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem â Naviâ Pillay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law, as stated by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Pillay, who was born in Durban in 1941, became the first South African woman of colour to be awarded the prize, and joins 11 other Nobel laureates, with four being in the category of peace.
